Pick Your Parts
Expensicat now asks which parts you'll use, lets each person order and hide the items in their own sidebar, and keeps whatever you hide a search away.
Pick what you use
Expensicat has four parts: invoicing, time tracking, bank transactions, and receipts and bills. Each one works on its own, and when you create a workspace, onboarding asks which ones you'll use (at least one). What you leave out starts hidden in your sidebar, and its setup step goes too: leave out bank transactions and you skip connecting a bank, leave out receipts and bills and you skip setting up the inbox. Nobody else is asked, so teammates who join, and everyone in a workspace that already existed, start with every item in their sidebar.
Each person edits their own sidebar
Choose Edit sidebar under your sidebar's items (it shows when you hover there), or in the menu at the bottom of the sidebar. Holding the mouse on an item for half a second does the same. Drag an item to move it, hide it with its ✕, or bring a hidden one back with Show; Done or Escape finishes, and every change saves at once. Inbox, Transactions, Invoices, Customers, Tracker and Vault can move or hide, while Overview stays first and Apps and Settings stay at the bottom. The sidebar you set up is yours in that workspace only, so teammates keep their own and nobody needs an admin to change theirs.
The rest stays a search away
A hidden item leaves your sidebar, but its pages and records stay where they are and search still opens them. Your overview follows your sidebar: Cash, Money in, Money out, the money chart and your latest transactions show only while Transactions is in it, Unpaid invoices only while Invoices is, and Unbilled time only while Tracker is. Once you hide the Inbox, Expensicat stops asking you for missing receipts, and requests already open to you expire without another reminder.
What it doesn't do
Hiding an item doesn't delete anything or change anyone else's sidebar. Expensicat keeps categorizing transactions from a bank you've connected, whatever your sidebar shows, and the API, CLI and MCP still reach every part.
New3
- Workspace
- Onboarding asks what you'll use Expensicat for, and skips connecting a bank if you leave out bank transactions and setting up your inbox if you leave out receipts and bills
- Edit sidebar, under your sidebar's items or in the menu at the bottom, lets you drag items into your own order and hide the ones you don't use, while search still opens what you hide
- The overview has an Unbilled time figure with the billable time you've tracked but not invoiced yet, and what it's worth when those projects all bill in one currency
Improvements4
- Workspace
- Your sidebar changes only for you in that workspace, so teammates keep their own and anyone can edit theirs without an admin
- Your overview follows your sidebar, so Cash, Money in, Money out, the money chart and latest transactions show only while Transactions is in it, Unpaid invoices only while Invoices is, and Unbilled time only while Tracker is
- Your sidebar loads in your order right away, and hidden items don't flash up when you reload
- Inbox
- Expensicat stops asking for missing receipts from anyone who hid the Inbox from their sidebar, and requests already open to them get no more reminders and expire
Fixes2
- Workspace
- The daily attention summary now arrives only when something needs your attention, where workspaces without a connected bank used to get one every morning saying they were incomplete
- The summary's title reads Financial source needs attention only when something is blocked
MCP server1
- Banking
- The new create-transaction tool records a bank or cash transaction on one of your bank accounts, with money out as a negative amount and an optional idempotency key so a retry doesn't record it twice
